Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville is sounding the alarm that more Democrats will soon follow California Governor Gavin Newsom in opposing transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

The veteran political operative believes Democrats can no longer ignore overwhelming public opposition to biological males competing against women athletes.
Newsom recently broke with his party’s progressive wing by declaring that allowing transgender athletes in women’s sports is “deeply unfair.” His surprising stance comes as polls show nearly 80% of Americans, including two-thirds of Democrats, oppose biological males competing in women’s athletic competitions.

“I think that’s a view that most Americans have,” Carville stated regarding Newsom’s opposition to transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“If you think the issue is that important, then you got to convince people. They’re telling people we got to be courageous and be for this. Why don’t you change public opinion and win an election, and then you might be able to achieve your goal? But right now the public doesn’t want it,” Carville added.
The outspoken Democrat argued that by pushing policies most Americans reject, his party is only helping Republicans win elections. Despite the overwhelming public consensus, Senate Democrats recently blocked legislation that would have banned transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
