A Notorious Swedish Gang Leader Captured in Turkey

Ismail Abdo, one of Sweden’s most wanted criminals and the leader of a major drug trafficking network, has been arrested in Turkey following a long-term international police operation. Abdo, 34, also known as “The Strawberry,” was apprehended on Friday, July 4, 2025, in the Turkish resort town of Adana.

His capture is a significant victory for Swedish law enforcement, which has been grappling with an unprecedented wave of gang violence fueled by a vicious turf war between Abdo and his rivals. “The arrest is the result of targeted work over time between Turkish and Swedish judicial systems,” Mats Berggren, a deputy chief at the Swedish police’s National Operations Department, said in a statement.

A Vicious and Bloody Turf War

Abdo was once the right-hand man to Rawa Majid, the infamous leader of Sweden’s Foxtrot gang.

However, the two had a falling out, and Abdo broke away to lead his own faction. This split has plunged Sweden into a cycle of violent revenge attacks that have shocked the once-peaceful nation.

As reported by the BBC, the conflict escalated dramatically after Abdo’s mother was shot and killed in an attack in Uppsala, Sweden, in September 2023. The violence became so severe that the Swedish government took the extraordinary step of deploying the army to support the police in combating the gangs.

The Challenges Ahead

Abdo is wanted in Sweden on suspicion of masterminding large-scale drug trafficking operations and instigating numerous violent crimes, including murder.

However, his prosecution faces a major hurdle: Abdo holds Turkish citizenship, and Turkey generally does not extradite its own citizens.

The arrest, detailed by Yahoo News, is part of a larger crackdown that has seen Turkish authorities seize assets worth over 1.5 billion Turkish lira. While Abdo’s capture is a major blow to his organization, the gang violence that has terrorized Sweden continues. The case highlights the complex, cross-border nature of modern organized crime and the immense challenge it poses to law enforcement, even with successful international cooperation.
