The New York Police Department deployed more than 70 officers to cover two events tied to the wedding. Detectives worked 8.5-hour shifts at $80 to $90 per hour, while patrol officers worked 9-hour shifts at $70 per hour. The total police cost topped $160,000, not counting other security expenses.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that Swift paid for police overtime and the event response permit. TMZ reported that New York Police Department sources put the overtime bill for officers assigned to MSG at roughly $160,000. Street closures, barricades, and privacy tents also went up around the venue, adding to the city’s logistical footprint for the event.

Who Really Pays? The Answer Is Murky

Even with Mamdani’s statement, the full picture on who pays is not settled. In New York City, most police overtime is funded by taxpayers through the city’s general budget. Reimbursement from private events is rare and inconsistently applied. Reports from Heavy.com noted that the answer to who pays the $160,000 bill “remains unclear.” The city’s event permitting rules require applicants to cover some fees, but they do not automatically require full reimbursement of all police costs.

This pattern is not new. Similar questions came up around the 2022 Met Gala and major concert tours, where officials said reimbursement status was “not finalized.” The New York City Police Department is already on track to spend about $1 billion in overtime this fiscal year. That staggering total includes planned events, World Cup security, and July 4th deployments — most of it paid by New York taxpayers, not event organizers.

Taxpayers Left Holding the Bag on NYC’s Overtime Problem

New York City’s overtime crisis goes well beyond one celebrity wedding. The New York Police Department is projected to spend roughly $92 million on special-events overtime and security costs this summer alone, with about $73 million of that coming from overtime pay. Most of that bill lands on city taxpayers. The NYPD has routinely blown past its overtime budget for years, with uniformed overtime running about 18 percent on top of regular salaries.

For conservative taxpayers, this is a familiar frustration. A private billionaire celebrity holds a lavish event in a major American city, and the public is left wondering how much of the security bill they are actually covering. Mamdani says Swift paid her share — and that is a good thing if true. But New York City’s broken overtime system means the public rarely gets a full, transparent accounting of what private events really cost them. That lack of accountability is the real problem, and it has nothing to do with Taylor Swift.
